Can dogs eat broad beans?

As this article is being written we are slowly beginning the “season” for broad beans. For many of us, it is a delicious snack and treat. It happens quite often that not only the owner, but also his dog is crazy about broad beans. But is it safe for your dog?

Unfortunately, broad beans cannot be given to dogs. It contains a compound called phytohemagglutinin, which can cause problems with our pet’s digestive system.

Usually, a small amount of long-cooked broad beans should not cause unpleasant effects. However, if your dog eats too many broad beans, especially raw or undercooked, it may cause
