Food supplements for dogs
Various nutrients are often missing from a dog’s diet. They may not be present at all, or they may be in insufficient quantities. In such cases, we use dietary supplements for dogs. These are usually tablets, liquids or powders that contain a large dose of essential ingredients, vitamins and minerals for the functioning of the dog’s body.
In which cases do we use dietary supplements for the dog?
There are basically three cases in which we use supplementation for dogs:
- Firstly, when we are aware that our pet’s diet is not providing the full requirements for certain vitamins or minerals. This is often the case with a homemade diet or a BARF diet. We are not always able to put together the right set of foods. This is due to the limited availability of different types of meat or plants, but also due to the dog’s food preferences. He may reject food with a mix of vegetables or a specific type of meat.
- Secondly, if you notice any symptoms in your dog. These may be joint or muscle problems, loss of hair or rashes. Of course, the source of these problems doesn’t have to be an incomplete diet. On the contrary, it can happen that an ingredient is too much. The dog may also suffer from food allergies or other diseases, caused by generic diseases, viruses, infections and others.
- Thirdly – preventively. We know our dog and we are often able to predict when it is necessary to additionally strengthen immunity, joints or coat.
Of course, each of these cases should be consulted with a vet and when the dog has ailments – it is a necessity.
What supplements for my dog should I choose?
The choice of supplements for dogs on the market is very wide. If we already have a diagnosed need, we can easily find what we are looking for. Shops usually have a very precise division, which takes into account both the age of the dog and the purpose we want to achieve through supplementation. By goal we mean, for example, strengthening the immune system, supporting the liver, improving the quality of the coat, etc. There are also vitamin and mineral mixes for dogs that have a broader spectrum of action.
Natural supplementation can also be used – that is, supplementing the necessary ingredients by giving snacks in the form of fruit or vegetables. Here, of course, you need to find out what vitamins and minerals they contain and what side effects may occur.
